Barbara Johnson

Barbara is wife to Allan, Mother to Tara, Trevor and Scott. Her son Trevor was diagnosed at age 4 with ALL, relapsed at age 9 and is now a long term survivor. In 1990 Barb founded Candlelighters Simcoe–Parents of Children with Cancer (Barrie and area). She has been the volunteer coordinator and facilitator since the beginning. Her work includes monthly parent support groups, home visits, telephone support, school re-integration program, organizing expressive and art therapy groups for the children, teen group, social events and public awareness. Barb served as a director on the Childhood Cancer Foundation Candlelighters Canada board for 3 years. In the past she has been on Canadian Cancer Society and Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario committees as a parent representative. She sits on the Special Education Advisory Committee for the local Catholic school board for children with cancer. She has been involved with OPACC since its formation in 1995 and is the current secretary for the now incorporated OPACC. Her prior background as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist has been valuable in identifying the learning and developmental challenges of children with cancer. Barb is a devoted and compassionate advocate for families of children with cancer.
