Parent Liaison (Part-time $20.29 p/h)

 

Ontario Parents Advocating for Children with Cancer is currently seeking a part-time Parent Liaison to work from the Hospital for Sick Children up to 10.5 hours per week.

 

Purpose:  

As a key representative of OPACC, the primary purpose of the part-time Parent Liaison is to assist families of children with cancer based out of the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario.  Working up to 10.5 hours per week (including some evenings and weekends), this individual will develop a sustained relationship with our full time Parent Liaison, families, and the health care teams as appropriate. The Parent Liaison will work as a “guide post” for families to empower them and to offer supports as needed from a non-medical view in collaboration with the treatment centre, service partners such as other childhood cancer organizations, social service providers, and schools in the family’s community to ensure broad based support.

 

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist families in becoming more comfortable in the treatment by enabling them to become a vital member of the health care team;

  • Alert parents to the services available to them, be it locally, at the hospitals or satellite clinics;

  • Along with the Parent Liaison, provide support to families through the Parent Support Group and Drop-in Program;

  • Work in conjunction with existing services to promote the value of those services;

  • Share information about programs and available supports from a wide variety of options including camps, support groups, organizations, etc.;

  • Work both one-on-one with families as well as on a broader scale with the healthcare teams;

  • Attend appropriate events as needed and directed.
     

Qualifications:

  • Be a parent who has or has had a child with cancer;

  • Have excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to use compassion and understanding toward each individual family case as presented to them;

  • Have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a small, team-based environment including one-on-one with families and on a broader scale with the healthcare teams;

  • Possess the desire to make a difference in the lives of children and families living with cancer;

  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Professional background in health care, social work, child life, child development, psychology or a related field and current registration with a Canadian professional regulatory body an asset

  • Prior experience in mediation or group facilitation an asset.
